Maybe due to the return of a busy pre pandemic life, 2022 has flown by. Over the last 12 months we have seen a number of home décor trends continuing and developing including Nature inspired Greens, Mid Century Modern, Maximalist aesthetics and the evolution of Scandi style into Japandi, bringing sleek Japanese style to the Scandinavian Hygge concept.

So what will the new year have in store? Here is the rundown on what interior designers are predicting will be the big key trends for home decor in 2023:

Warm Hues

Warm tones are a key theme in 2023 colour palettes across a range of styles, and this is echoed by the Dulux Colour of the Year, Wild Wonder (more on that in next months blog). Introducing burnt oranges, warm gold and caramel shades to interiors not only creates of feeling of comfort, but will also energise your interior spaces, and so these hues are perfect for the colder months at the start of the year.

Try exploring warm buttery neutrals for your wall colour and consider velvet fabrics in rich tones for curtains or upholstered items to add to the cocooning feel.

Natural Textures

Aligned with the move towards sustainability, the trend for the use of natural textures and materials in interior design is steadily increasing. Textural fabrics, natural fibres such as wool, cotton and linen, wood and natural stone surfaces are all gaining in popularity.

Textures are also now being utilised outside of furniture and furnishings. Expect texture to appear in architectural details and even lighting through use of the materials used.

    Get the look by:

    • Opting for an earthy pared down versions of your chosen colour palette
    • Mixing textures to layer and add interest
    • Introducing cosy textures or natural fibres in soft furnishings

    Retro Influences

Late 20th century design will continue to influence interior design in the coming months. As with fashion, interior design trends are proving to by cyclical and 1970's style especially is going to be a growing trend in 2023 with a colour palette focused on rich reds, oranges and browns. This decade was heavily focused on large scale bold geometric patterns which are a key element to the look.

The key is to not go all out 70's if you want to keep a contemporary feel. You can introduce elements of retro style to your home by adding rugs or artwork featuring bold geometrics or purchasing authentic pieces from vintage stores or auctions to sit alongside more contemporary furnishings.

    Sustainability

This is a trend that is less design led but more focused on our buying behaviours. Influenced by the media coverage of environmental issues and the current cost of living, consumers are thinking of longevity and purchasing higher quality furnishings rather than low value fast fashion items.

Incorporate the sustainability trend in your home by:

    • Opting for the highest quality items you can afford that will stand the test of time.
    • Reupholstering, refurbishing or repurposing your furniture to give it a new lease of life.
    • Choose designs that you will love for years to come rather than adhering rigidly to short lived trends.

    Interior Colour Trends for 2023

If it seems that 2022 was all about calming green hues, 2023 is shaping up to be a year of warmer and more invigorating colour. Expect to see plenty of earthy tones alongside warm neutrals, pink tones and experimentation with deep rich accents.

The general consensus is that cool greys are out and warm neutrals will continue to dominate the overall look.

Earth tones will encompass muted shades of terracotta, green yellow, and plum - warm colours to provide a harmonious contrast to natural textures used in furniture and accessories.

    Mediterranean Blues

According to the interior design experts at sofa company Swyft, as summer approaches there will be an emergence of Mediterranean Blue as a colour trend, reminiscent of Greek and Mediterranean climates and decor. As an accent colour, this is the perfect partner for pastel and warm colour schemes to add pops of contrasting colour in feature walls, armchair fabrics, artwork or home accessories.

Viva Magenta - Pantone Colour of the Year

Pantone, the leading authority on colour and colour trends have recently announced their colour of the year for 2023 as Viva Magenta, a vivid and animated red. This powerful and brave hue is described by Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute as:

"inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes of the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known. Rooted in the primordial, Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, it galvanises our spirit helping us to build our inner strength"

We expect to see the emergence of this hue in technology and fashion during 2023 before translating into interior accents.
